NAIL RIDGES?

Sometimes I wish I could write down in seconds everything that's on my mind. I write and delete a thousand times... It feels like my hands do not keep up with the speed of my own thoughts... That there is always something else to add, or still missing.

I always have so much to say about nails (I know... but there's really a lot to say), that sometimes I don't know how, or where to start, or how to address it.

So... here it goes

I have literally experienced more than once, clients or nail technicians thinking that it is normal and correct to file the nail ridges, in order to remove the unsightly striations. I confess that among the various nonsense I`ve seen being committed, this is one of those that really get´s into my skin and upsets me

WHAT IS A NAIL RIDGE AFTER ALL

We associate the word striations with pregnancy and rapid weight changes, but nails can also have ridges (striations), or small grooves.

As we age, it is normal for our nails to lose their ability to absorb nutrients. They may even lose some of their shine and become more opaque. These are normal changes that reflect the slowing down of our body in the natural aging process.

There are also several reasons why nails can have ridges. The most common (in the absence of a medical pathology) is the one I mentioned above.

Poor nutrition, or a vitamin deficiency can also be a cause, but then we are getting into pathologies of clinical origin.

EMBRACE HEALTHY ALTERNATIVES FOR PERFECT NAILS

Nowadays, is very easy to find a product for nail ridges, that do not damage the nail plate.

From specific nail polish bases, to the use of opaque colours and thicker top coats, we can perfectly camouflage the unaesthetic ridges, without filing them, which will undoubtedly weaken the nails. There are specific nail lacquers base coats that often have “ridge filler” written on the label. - they generally have a whitish color, that helps to camouflage the striations on the nails, while filling them in slightly. The color of these foundations is designed for those who like to use lighter and more natural tones, but you can choose to use it with any other colour you like. If combined with a “gel effect” top coat, the cosmetic problem is solved without reducing the nails to half of their natural thickness.

I do recommend the use of a good cuticle oil, that nourishes your nails, as well as your cuticles. Be careful with nail hardeners - they aren´t the solution for all your nail problems.

There are many reasons why a nail can be grooved or brittle... it can be due to external or internal reasons. Understanding the why, is essential for a effective treatment.

For those who prefer to choose an option that doesn't require waiting for the nail polishes to dry, or want something more durable, artificial nails are always an option. From gel polish ), to gel or acrylic, there are several options for you to choose from, according to your nail plate needs.
